Day 4: Another Day of Transit, Then Landing in the English Countryside

July 29, 2014

So the jet-lag finally caught up with us this morning. Our hotel room/apartment had no outside windows so it was perfectly dark and sound proof… no one set an alarm, thinking we would get up a reasonable time, but alas… we woke at 12:30 to the entrance of the cleaning crew. We paid the extra 10 pounds an hour to quickly get ready and be on our way.

We had originally planned to spend the morning hopping around on the tube and seeing a few more sites but since our day was already half over, we headed to the train station. We were headed to Peterborough, north east of London. One of my travel mates, Kayla, had a high-school friend who was stationed there with the US Air Force. They graciously invited us to stay for a few days.

The train ride was about an hour out of London and was so smooth and efficient. Train is really the ideal way to travel. We arrived in Peterborough right on time and caught a cab to our host’s home. Little did we know they lived in an American-ized British home. It is open and modern on the inside but quaint and picturesque on the outside. It really is the best of both worlds.

Our hosts are Shane, Mallory and their six month old son Blake. They are originally from southeast Iowa and Illinois so we get along great. We really got lucky being able to stay with them. They have lots of extra room and are the most welcoming people you could meet. Their sense of adventure is just as strong as ours so they have been great in helping us plan the next few days. They ordered in the best Fish & Chips that Peterborough has to offer, which were great, and we called it a night by laughing a ton and talking life.

Tomorrow we are headed to the English country side to see a Manor House and find a little culture.
